Looking across the water from a vantage point on the river, this panoramic black-and-white view takes in the full sweep of the Manhattan skyline, with towers stacked tightly along the shoreline. The wide format lets the eye travel from one end of the island to the other, a sight that photographers of the early and mid twentieth century often chased as the city's vertical growth became its defining feature. Panoramas like this one recorded a skyline in motion, when new towers were rising and older buildings were still a common presence, and they remain useful today for comparing how the shoreline has changed. Look closely at the water's edge, where piers and waterfront structures hint at the working harbor that once lined the island.
