The panorama shows Manhattan's skyline rising across open water, with the buildings stacked densely along the shoreline and the river filling the foreground. Panoramic views like this were a popular way to record New York's growing profile in the early twentieth century, when the city's towers were climbing higher and the harbor was still busy with ferries, freight and passenger liners. Black and white film suited the subject well, reducing the scene to strong contrasts between the dark water, the pale sky and the geometry of the rooftops. Looking across the wide frame, you can see how the city reads as one continuous wall of stone and steel from the water's edge.
