The skyline here is seen from the water, with the Brooklyn Bridge stretching across the middle distance, a view that was once a favorite for photographers working in the city. The bridge, designed by John A. Roebling and completed in 1883 under his son Washington Roebling and later Emily Warren Roebling, was among the largest suspension bridges of its day and remains a defining element of the East River waterfront. Panoramic prints like this one, made by joining several exposures or by using a specialized camera, let viewers take in the full sweep of lower Manhattan's towers and the bridge's cables at once.
