This panoramic view stretches the full width of the New York waterfront, with the city rising behind open water. Its wide format was well suited to the skyline, which by the late 1800s was changing quickly as steel-frame towers began to crowd the southern tip of Manhattan. Early panoramic photographs like this one were often made by joining several exposures or by using specialized cameras that swept across the scene. Such images now serve as valuable records of how the harbor and its shoreline looked before later construction reshaped them.
