Seen from the harbor, the panorama stretches across the southern tip of Manhattan, with the dense cluster of towers rising behind the waterfront. Shot in black and white, the view strips away color and makes the building masses, shadows, and the long line of the shoreline the main subject. Lower Manhattan from the water was a favorite vantage for early twentieth-century photographers, who used wide-format cameras and stitched or extended frames to capture the rapid vertical growth of the financial district. Such views record a city that was reaching upward faster than its streets could easily hold, and they remain useful for comparing how the skyline has changed.
