Few panoramas of Midtown Manhattan show the skyline as a single unbroken sweep, so this one rewards a slow look from left to right. Black-and-white views like this were common in the mid-20th century, when the city's towers were still a fresh symbol of American industry and ambition. Photographers of the era often used wide-format cameras or stitched several exposures together to capture the density of buildings packed along the island's core. Look closely at the rooftops and the spaces between them, which reveal how tightly the city had grown by then.
