Taken from the roof of the Times Building, this 1906 panorama looks out over a midtown still reshaping itself around Longacre Square, which the newspaper's move into the new tower had renamed Times Square only two years earlier. The building, completed in 1904, stood among the taller structures in the district, so the vantage offers a wide sweep of rooftops, streets and the growing skyline. Panoramas like this were popular with visitors and civic boosters who wanted to show the scale of a fast-growing city. Notice how much of the view is low masonry and open street, a reminder of how quickly the blocks around Times Square would fill in.
