Few views of the East River waterfront are as expansive as this panorama, which takes in the harbor and the lower Manhattan skyline with the Brooklyn Bridge spanning the water. Completed in 1883, the bridge was the longest suspension span of its day and a bold engineering statement for a city that was rapidly growing upward and outward. Panoramic photographs like this one were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when multiple exposures or wide-format cameras let viewers take in the whole sweep of a busy port. Look closely at the waterfront and the rigging of the ships, which reflect the harbor's central role in the city's commerce during that era.
