The Brooklyn Bridge's granite tower rises above a crowd of moored barges and steamships, a reminder of how much of the city's life ran along its waterfront in the decades after the bridge opened in 1883. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed under his son Washington Roebling, the bridge was among the first great steel-wire suspension spans, and its towers were built on caissons sunk deep into the East River. Look closely at the vessels in the foreground: the river traffic they represent is what made the crossing and the surrounding docks so valuable to New York's commerce.
