Few views of lower Manhattan capture the skyline and the East River in a single sweep quite like a panoramic shot that takes in the Brooklyn Bridge. Completed in 1883 after more than a decade of construction under the engineering guidance of John A. Roebling and later his son Washington Roebling, the bridge was the longest suspension span in the world when it opened and linked two cities that had only recently merged. Panoramic photographs of the period were prized for their ability to record the rapid growth of the waterfront, where church spires, warehouses, and early office towers crowded the shoreline. The bridge's cables and towers, set against the city behind them, remain one of the most recognizable compositions in American urban photography.
