Columbus Circle, where Broadway, Eighth Avenue and Central Park South meet, is anchored here by the tall column of the Maine Monument, the focal point that sets this view apart from other panoramas of the city. The monument honors the sailors who died when the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor in 1898, and its ship's-prow-style base and column were raised as a memorial to them. Panoramic shots of the circle from this period capture the traffic, streetcar lines and dense low-rise blocks around the park's southwest corner, showing how the intersection once looked before later skyscrapers changed its skyline.
