Nassau Country Club stood on Long Island's North Shore near Glen Cove in 1913, amid the Gold Coast estates of wealthy New York families. The surrounding land was still largely farm and woodland, but the Long Island Rail Road's Glen Cove branch brought commuters and summer residents out from Manhattan. By the 1910s golf had become a fashionable pastime, and the club hosted matches, teas, and dances for members and their guests. Nassau County had been separated from Queens only in 1899, so its local government was still taking shape as the automobile began to change how families traveled between their country homes and the city.
