Buffalo, New York, in 1913 was a Great Lakes and canal city whose fortunes rested on grain, steel, and shipping. Its grain elevators and docks at the eastern end of the lakes handled midwestern wheat bound for canal and rail, and the Lackawanna steel works to the south drew thousands of workers. The Albright Art Gallery, opened on the edge of Delaware Park in 1905 with a Greek Revival facade by Edward B. Green, was a civic point of pride after the 1901 Pan-American Exposition had brought the city national attention. Hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls lit its streets and factories, and the population had passed 400,000 by the 1910 census.
