Geneva, New York, sat at the northern tip of Seneca Lake in 1913, a small city whose economy rested on the lake, the surrounding fruit country, and its colleges. Orchards and vineyards on the nearby slopes sent apples, peaches, and grapes to market by rail, and the state agricultural experiment station on the city's edge drew growers eager to learn about new varieties and orchard care. Hobart College, founded in 1822, and William Smith College, its affiliated women's college established in 1908, gave the town an academic presence alongside its farm trade. Residents would have known Geneva as a quiet lakeside community where the water shaped both commerce and leisure, and where farming and education were the two pillars of local life.
