Madison Square in 1913 sat at the heart of a city growing fast in every direction. Manhattan's population had passed 2 million by the 1910 census, and the square's office towers, hotels and theaters stood in the shadow of the new Metropolitan Life Tower, completed in 1909 and the tallest building in the world at the time. The Madison Square Garden building on Madison Square, built by Stanford White and opened in 1890, was still the city's great arena for prizefights, horse shows and circuses. Elevated trains, streetcars and horse-drawn wagons shared the streets, and the Fifth Avenue and Broadway corridors nearby drew shoppers and theatergoers from across the region. New Yorkers of the period knew the square as a crossroads of business and entertainment, a place where the modern city was visibly taking shape.
