Niagara Falls, New York, in 1913 was a city shaped by two forces: the falls that drew tourists from across the country and the hydroelectric power harnessed from the Niagara River. Power plants on the American side ran factories, and electrochemical and chemical works had settled along the gorge to take advantage of cheap electricity. The state had set aside the land around the falls as a public reservation in 1885, so visitors strolled the paths of Goat Island and Prospect Park and took the Maid of the Mist boats toward the spray. Residents knew the city as both an industrial town and a honeymoon destination, a place where the roar of the water and the hum of the generators could be heard at the same time.
