Niagara Falls, New York, in 1914 was a city built on electricity and tourism. The Niagara Falls Power Company and the Adams Power plant had begun turning the river's force into hydroelectric power in the 1890s, and by the early 1900s factories making chemicals, abrasives, and metals had clustered along the gorge to take advantage of cheap current. Hotels, souvenir shops, and trolley lines served the steady stream of visitors who came to view the cataract from the Prospect Park side and the Goat Island footpaths. The Falls were already a national attraction, and residents of the city would have known their town as the place where the river's power ran the mills and where the great waterfall drew crowds year after year.
