Lake Placid in 1914 was a lakeside village whose streets and waterfront show a community built around summer guests. Its hotels, boat liveries, and guide services depended on visitors who came to the Adirondacks to fish, paddle, and hike, while the hemlock bark tanning and sawmill trades that had once employed many local men had largely died out. Motorcars were beginning to appear on the dirt roads leading into the valley, though horses and carriages still dominated daily travel. Winter brought far fewer visitors, and the lake's frozen surface was the village's chief attraction during those quiet months.
