Lake Placid, New York, in 1912 was a summer resort town in the Adirondack Mountains, where the local economy rested on visitors more than on the timber and iron that had shaped the region earlier in the century. Railroad connections brought vacationers from New York City and other eastern cities, and hotels along the lake and its shore catered to them with boating, hiking, and views of the surrounding peaks. Melvil Dewey's Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895, had already helped establish the village as a place for educators and families seeking healthful outdoor recreation. Residents of the period knew the village mainly as a summer destination set among the mountains, and its hotels were central to both the local payroll and its reputation.
