Lake Placid, New York, in 1912 was a small village in the Adirondack Mountains that had grown up largely around tourism. Its economy rested on the summer and winter visitors who filled its hotels and boarding houses, and the Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by librarian Melvil Dewey, gave the village much of its character. The club promoted outdoor recreation in all seasons, so skating, snowshoeing, and skiing were already drawing guests to the frozen lake long before the village became known to the wider world. Rail service through the Delaware and Hudson line connected the village to larger towns and to the cities whose residents came north to escape the heat. The village's population was modest, and most residents would have known Lake Placid as a resort town set among the peaks and lakes of the region.
