Lake Placid, New York, in 1912 was a small Adirondack village whose economy rested on summer tourism, with grand hotels, boarding houses and steamboat landings drawing visitors to the lake's shores. The village had already hosted the 1904 Olympic Games' rehearsal-style winter attractions only in the sense of its growing reputation as a resort; its hotels, camps and rail connections by the Delaware and Hudson line carried vacationers from New York City and Montreal. Local life centered on the lake, on guideboats and launches, and on the mountain views that made the region a destination for painters and health-seekers. A view taken from a high vantage point like this one would have shown a town the residents knew mainly as a summer retreat, not yet the winter sports center it would later become.
