Saranac Inn, on the shore of Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks of northern New York, was a summer resort in 1912, part of a region that had drawn city visitors for decades. The wider Saranac Lake area had changed sharply since the 1880s, when Dr. Edward Livingston Trudeau opened his cottage sanatorium for tuberculosis patients and the village became known as a place to take the open-air cure. The arrival of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad had made the trip from New York and other cities far easier, and by the 1910s the lakes were lined with hotels, boarding houses, and private camps. Guests at a lakeside inn like this one came for the boating, fishing, and clean air, and many would have known the Saranacs as much for health as for pleasure.
