Lake Placid, New York, in 1912 was a summer and winter resort village in the Adirondack Mountains of Essex County, where tourism had largely replaced the logging and iron work that had shaped the wider region in the nineteenth century. Rail service brought visitors up from New York City and Albany, and hotels, boarding houses, and private camps around the lakes depended on their seasonal business. Melvil Dewey's Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895, drew educators and well-to-do families who came for outdoor recreation, and the village was known across the state for its clean air and mountain scenery. Residents in 1912 would have thought of their town as a healthful retreat and a place of lakes, guides, and carriage roads, not yet as the site of the Winter Olympics that would arrive two decades later.
