Lake Placid in 1912 sat in a valley of the Adirondacks, where the region's older lumber and iron trades had faded and seasonal visitors and summer property owners supplied much of the village's business. State lawmakers had set aside the Adirondack Forest Preserve in 1885, so the surrounding woods were increasingly protected rather than cut for timber. Year-round residents would have known the village through its shops, churches, and the lake, which served summer boaters and winter skaters alike. The wider fame of Lake Placid still lay two decades ahead, when the 1932 Winter Olympics would bring international attention to these same slopes.
