Lake Placid in 1914 was a mountain village in Essex County, New York, and its summer season was about to be unsettled by events an ocean away. When war broke out in Europe that August, the hotels and boarding houses that relied on travelers from eastern cities faced uncertain bookings and anxious guests. Local hotel keepers, boat liveries, and guides depended on a full summer to carry them through the long winter months, when the village turned quiet. Residents would have known the village by its lake, its hotels, and the church steeples that marked the center of daily life.
