Lake Placid, New York, in 1911 was a small village in the Adirondack Mountains that lived mostly on summer visitors. The Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by Melvil Dewey, had turned the lakeshore into a resort for well-to-do guests who came for boating, hiking, and golf. Rail service on the Delaware and Hudson line brought vacationers north from New York City and Albany, and hotels, boarding houses, and guide services depended on their seasonal business. Local people knew the lake as a place of mountain air and quiet water, and winter sports were beginning to draw attention there. The Olympic Winter Games came to Lake Placid only in 1932, but in 1911 the town was already building its name as a retreat for the leisured and the athletic.
