Lake View Lodge sat on the shore of Big Moose Lake in Herkimer County, in the central Adirondacks of New York, in 1911. The region's older economy of logging and hemlock bark tanning was giving way to summer tourism, and wealthy families from Utica, Albany, and New York City were building camps and hotels along the lakeshores. The state had created the Adirondack Forest Preserve in the 1890s and written its protection into the constitution, so the forests that drew visitors were being held as public land rather than cut. Guests at a lodge like this one came for boating, fishing, and quiet, and the lake, the rail connections, and the summer season shaped daily life for the local families who ran the hotels and served the visitors.
