Big Moose Lake, in the Adirondack country of Herkimer County, New York, was a summer destination by 1911, and The Glennmore was one of the hotels that catered to visitors arriving from New York City and other eastern cities. The region's older economy had rested on lumbering and hemlock bark for tanning, but by the early 1900s those industries were fading as the forests were cut over. Summer boarders increasingly filled the lakeside hotels, cottages, and camps, and the state had already set aside much of the surrounding land as the Adirondack Forest Preserve in the 1890s. For the people who ran the hotels and worked the docks and kitchens, the season's rhythm of boats, guests, and rowing parties on the water defined the year.
