In 1911, The Glennmore stood on the shore of Big Moose Lake in Herkimer County, New York, where the Adirondack wilderness had become a summer destination for city visitors. Rail service, which reached the lake by about 1900, brought guests from New York and other eastern cities to resorts built for fishing, boating, and rest. The region's earlier economy had depended on logging and the hemlock bark trade for tanneries, but by the 1910s many lakeside properties were given over to sportsmen and summer families. The Adirondack Park had been established in 1892, and its protected forest lands shaped how the area was used and seen. Guests at a place like The Glennmore would have known Big Moose as a quiet retreat, with a lake and forest that drew visitors back each summer.
