Photographed in 1911, the Fulton Chain of Lakes sat in the southern Adirondacks of New York, a string of connected waters that drew summer visitors from the cities downstate and from Utica and Albany. By then the region's old timber and hemlock bark economy was fading as the cut-over forests thinned out, and resort life, sporting camps, and boarding houses were taking its place. The Adirondack Park had been created in 1892 to protect the upland forests, so the lakes were increasingly valued for scenery and recreation rather than for logging drives and tanneries. Lake steamers, rowboats, and the cottages along the shore shaped daily life during the season, while the year-round residents depended on guiding, caretaking, and seasonal service work. The view of open water and wooded shoreline would have been familiar to anyone who spent a July on these lakes.
