Fulton Chain, in the Adirondack country of Herkimer County, New York, was a string of connected lakes in 1911 that drew summer visitors from the cities downstate and from Utica and Syracuse. The region's economy still leaned on timber, tanning bark, and the seasonal trade in hotels, boarding houses, and sporting camps, while the nearby Adirondack Railway, which reached Old Forge around 1900, carried guests and freight into the woods. New York had placed Adirondack land under state protection in the 1890s, so the forest that surrounded these lakes was valued as much for recreation and watershed protection as for its wood. Steamboats and guideboats moved people along the chain, and a visitor in 1911 would have known the place as a fishing and hunting retreat where the lakes and the surrounding forest shaped daily life.
