Buffalo and the Erie Basin in 1911 sat at the eastern end of Lake Erie, where the Buffalo River and the Erie Canal's terminus fed grain, coal, iron ore and lumber into a dense web of elevators, warehouses and rail yards. The city had grown past 400,000 residents by the decade's start, and its grain elevators and steel and manufacturing plants made it one of the largest industrial centers in the state. Shipping through the basin depended on lake freighters moving between Great Lakes ports and the railroads that carried their cargo east, and the waterfront was a place of constant loading and unloading. Buffalo was also preparing for the Pan-American Exposition's legacy, a fair held there in 1901, whose grounds were still remembered by residents. The harbor scene the panorama records would have been familiar to any working Buffalonian as the city's economic heart.
