Buffalo, New York, at Main and Genesee Streets in 1911 sat at the eastern end of Lake Erie and the western end of the Erie Canal, which made it one of the country's major grain-handling and shipping ports. Its grain elevators, lake freighters, and rail yards drew workers from across Western New York and from abroad, and the city's population had grown past 400,000 by the 1910 census. Electric streetcars ran along the busy downtown avenues, and hydroelectric power carried from Niagara Falls had been reaching the city since the mid-1890s, a point local boosters often cited. Main Street was the commercial spine of this growing industrial city, and the intersection with Genesee Street was among its most crowded corners.
