Buffalo in 1911 was still recovering its public image after September 1901, when President William McKinley was shot at the Temple of Music during the Pan-American Exposition and died in the city eight days later. The fairgrounds had given way to parks and parkways laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, and residents used the broad lawns on summer evenings. Across town, the Larkin Company ran a mail-order soap business from a headquarters building Frank Lloyd Wright had designed. Against that backdrop, members of the Modern Woodmen of America assembled for this group portrait, a record of a lodge that measured its strength in numbers.
