Buffalo, New York, in 1911 was a major Great Lakes port, where grain elevators, lake freighters, and the terminus of the Erie Canal drove much of the city's commerce. Its factories turned out soap, steel products, and automobiles, and the Pierce-Arrow works had given the city a national name in motoring. Electric power carried from Niagara Falls had been reaching the city since 1896, supporting mills and streetcar lines along the lakeshore. Fraternal societies such as the Woodmen of America were a central part of working-class social life, offering lodge meetings, sick benefits, and burial insurance before public welfare existed. The Woodmen gathering recorded here reflects that network of neighborhood halls and mutual aid that kept many Buffalo families afloat.
