Buffalo, New York, in 1911 was a major lake and canal port, with grain elevators along the Lake Erie waterfront and freight moving through the Erie Canal terminus. The city had grown past 400,000 residents, and much of its industry drew on nearby steel works and on hydroelectric power carried in from Niagara Falls. Fraternal societies were a large part of civic life for working families, who joined lodges for sick benefits, insurance, and fellowship at a time before most public welfare programs existed. The Modern Woodmen of America, a fraternal benefit society founded in Iowa in 1883, had members across the country, and a gathering of its Buffalo membership would have been a visible sign of the city's organized social world in that decade.
