Gates Circle sat on Delaware Avenue in north Buffalo, New York, in 1911, where the city's wealthier families had built large houses along the boulevards Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux had laid out a generation earlier. Buffalo was then one of the country's major grain-milling and lake-shipping cities, with elevators and rail yards along the waterfront that handled cargo moving between the Great Lakes and the Erie Canal. The city had about 400,000 residents, and streetcar lines carried workers and shoppers between its industrial east side and the quieter residential neighborhoods to the north. Only a decade earlier, the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 had drawn visitors from around the world to Buffalo's park grounds, and many residents still knew the city as the host of that fair.
