Shelton Square in downtown Buffalo, New York, pictured in 1911, sat in the heart of a city that had grown rich on Lake Erie and the Erie Canal. Buffalo was then one of the country's largest grain-handling and milling ports, with elevators along the waterfront and rail lines of the New York Central and Erie railroads bringing wheat, coal, and manufactured goods through the city. Its population had passed 400,000 by the 1910 census, and streetcars carried shoppers, clerks, and dock workers through the downtown streets. Residents in 1911 knew the city as a busy commercial center still proud of the Pan-American Exposition it had hosted a decade earlier.
