Shelton Square in Buffalo, New York, in 1911 sat at the busy center of a city built on lake and canal trade. Buffalo was the eastern end of the Erie Canal and a major Lake Erie port, and its grain elevators and rail yards moved Midwestern wheat and freight toward eastern markets. Electric streetcars carried workers and shoppers through downtown, while hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls fed the city's factories and mills. Residents still pointed to the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 as proof that Buffalo could draw crowds from across the country. The square was where commerce, streetcar traffic, and civic life all came together.
