Rochester, New York, in 1911 was one of the country's leading manufacturing cities, with more than 200,000 residents. Its economy rested on the Genesee River's waterpower, a long tradition of flour milling, and the growing camera and photographic business of George Eastman's company, along with optical and clothing manufacturers. The Erie Canal still passed through the city, and rail lines carried goods and visitors in and out. A Shriners gathering drew Masonic fraternal members from across the state and beyond, filling hotels and streets with parades and social events. For residents, the city's identity was tied to its industry and to the civic pride that came with hosting large public occasions like this one.
