Mirror Lake lies in the village of Lake Placid in Essex County, in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, and in 1911 the village depended heavily on summer visitors. Its economy had been shifting for decades from logging, tanning and iron mining toward tourism, with Delaware and Hudson rail service bringing city families north for the season. The Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by librarian Melvil Dewey, drew educators and well-to-do guests who came for the mountain air, canoeing and hiking. Local residents and summer boarders knew the lake as a still stretch of water beneath the high peaks, and hotel owners and village promoters advertised that quiet setting widely.
