Mirror Lake sits beside the village of Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York, and by 1911 the district lived mainly on summer visitors. The Delaware and Hudson Railroad had reached Lake Placid in the 1890s, bringing city families who stayed in large hotels and boarding houses and spent their days on the water, on hikes, and at lakeside drives. Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by Melvil Dewey, had drawn a steady following of educators and well-to-do guests who valued the quiet of the mountains. Local men earned wages as guides, boatmen, carpenters, and hotel staff, and the seasonal rhythm of arrivals and departures set the pace of town life. Lake Shore Drive, the road running along the water's edge, was one of the places where visitors went to see the lake and the surrounding peaks.
