Mirror Lake lies beside the village of Lake Placid in Essex County, in New York's Adirondack Mountains, and in 1907 the village depended heavily on summer visitors. Hotels and boarding houses lined the shore and nearby roads, and the Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by librarian Melvil Dewey, drew educators and well-to-do families seeking mountain air and outdoor recreation. Rail connections brought guests north from the Hudson Valley and New York City, so the seasonal trade shaped nearly every local business, from livery stables to grocers. Winters were much quieter, and residents had long relied on logging, farming, and guiding hunters and anglers into the surrounding peaks. The lake's still surface, which gave it its name, was a major draw for the boating and bathing that filled the warm months.
