Mirror Lake, in the village of Lake Placid in Essex County, New York, was in 1911 a centerpiece of a resort economy built on the Adirondack mountains and the lakes around them. Summer visitors arrived largely by rail, and the Delaware and Hudson line had brought travelers into the region for years, feeding hotels, boarding houses, and guide services. The Lake Placid Club, founded in 1895 by librarian Melvil Dewey, shaped much of the village's social life, drawing educators and professional people who came for outdoor recreation, lectures, and an emphasis on healthful living. Local residents of the period knew Lake Placid as a summer and increasingly winter destination, where the village's fortunes rose and fell with the tourist season and with the state's protection of the surrounding forest.
