Rochester, New York, was a fast-growing manufacturing city in 1911, known as the "Flour City" for its milling and home to Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb optics, and the Gleason Works. Its population had passed 200,000 by the 1910 census, and the Genesee River and the Erie Canal had long shaped its industry. In August 1911 the city hosted the national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, the organization of Union Civil War veterans, and President William Howard Taft came to address the gathering. For many residents, the encampment was a reminder that the city's growth rested on a generation of men who had fought to preserve the Union, and the streets filled with veterans, families, and visitors. The panoramic view records that crowd and the city behind it.
