Rochester, New York, in 1911 was one of the most productive manufacturing cities in the state, with a population of roughly 200,000. Flour milling along the Genesee River, clothing and shoe factories, and optical and photographic firms, including the Eastman Kodak Company and Bausch & Lomb, gave the city its reputation for industry, and the Erie Canal and several railroads moved its goods. The American Institute of Banking, founded in 1900 as the education arm of the American Bankers Association, ran evening study classes for bank clerks and junior officers, so this Rochester chapter's members were young men building careers in a city where local banks financed a great deal of that manufacturing. Their group portrait records the ambitions of a generation of white-collar workers who would have known Rochester as a city of mills, factories, and steady civic growth.
