Old Forge, in the Adirondack hills of Herkimer County, New York, was a small lake-country village in 1911, and the Bald Mountain House shows how much of its life then depended on summer visitors. The Fulton Chain of lakes, linked by short carries and steamboats, drew anglers, canoeists, and city families looking for cool air and quiet. The state had set aside Forest Preserve land decades earlier, and the Adirondack Park had been created in 1892, so the region was increasingly known as a protected wilderness rather than a logging frontier. Guides, boatmen, hotel keepers, and seasonal workers made up much of the local workforce, and the summer season set the rhythm of the village. Residents of the time would have known Old Forge as a gateway to the lakes and mountains that visitors came to reach.
