Dreamland, the electrically lit amusement park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, lay in ruins in May 1911 after a fire swept through its buildings on the night of May 27. William H. Reynolds had opened the park in 1904, and its towers, illuminated facades, and attractions drew crowds to a peninsula that had become New York's favorite summer destination for working-class visitors arriving by trolley, elevated train, and subway. The loss struck at a resort whose hotels, bathhouses, and boardwalk concessions relied on heavy weekend traffic from Manhattan and the outer boroughs. Reynolds set about rebuilding, and the damage became one of the most talked-about events of that season on the island.
