In 1911, the Fulton Chain of Lakes in the central Adirondacks of New York was a summer destination for sportsmen and vacationers who reached the region by rail and then by small steamers and launches. The area's economy still leaned on the forest, where logging and hemlock bark stripping for tanneries had shaped the local towns for decades, though the bark trade was already fading as the supply of hemlock dwindled. Old Forge, at the head of the chain, served as the main gateway for visitors and guides, and many of its residents depended on hotels, boat service, and seasonal camp work. Since the state had established the Adirondack Park in 1892, New Yorkers were debating how much of the wild land should stay in public forest, a question that shaped life along these lakes for years to come.
