Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, in 1911 was a small men's liberal arts school in the village of Clinton, about 10 miles southeast of Utica in the Mohawk Valley. The college had been chartered in 1812 and took its roots from an earlier academy founded by missionary Samuel Kirkland, so by this date it was nearly a century old. Utica's mills, which turned out textiles, knit goods, and other manufactured products, drew much of the regional workforce and shaped the economy that surrounded the campus. Clinton itself remained a quiet college village, where students, faculty, and local townspeople shared churches, a main street, and the rhythms of the academic year. Residents of the region knew the college mainly as a fixture of local pride and tradition rather than as a center of industry.
